About Swedish Biodiversity Symposium

Swedish Biodiversity Symposium, Sweden's largest interdisciplinary conference where researchers, experts and stakeholders in biodiversity gather to promote positive development in the field. See you in Gothenburg, 21 - 23 October 2025.

Why a Swedish Biodiversity Symposium

We are in a situation where biodiversity is declining at a record rate, threatening humans' continued livelihood and well-being.

At the same time, there is much research that can contribute to solutions to the biodiversity crisis, driving international decisions to conserve biodiversity, with many practical examples of successful conservation efforts. In addition, biodiversity solutions can often be combined with solutions to the climate crisis. In these contexts, science has a role in supporting decisions on national measures to implement international commitments.

To seize these opportunities and address the biodiversity crisis, several major Swedish organisations are joining forces to create Sweden's first Swedish Biodiversity Symposium. It will bring together researchers, other biodiversity experts and stakeholders to promote positive developments in the field.

Our vision is that the broad collaboration between many organisations and the fact that the conference operates at the interface between research and society will contribute to new opportunities to develop work on biodiversity in Sweden, as well as internationally.

Why the theme Societal Transformation – From Knowledge to Action?

At the end of 2024, IPBES published two reports: The Nexus Assessment and The Transformative Change Assessment. In the latter, IPBES demonstrates that transformative change is possible—if strategies and actions for the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of biodiversity and nature are inclusive and also address the underlying drivers of biodiversity loss. This report forms the basis for the theme of the Swedish Biodiversity Symposium.

IPBES highlights five key strategies with associated actions that have complementary and synergistic effects, and which both countries and individuals can use to promote deliberate transformative change for global sustainability. To link each session to the symposium’s main theme: Transformative Change – From Knowledge to Action, the specific strategy or strategies in focus are indicated for each session.
