Nature-positive economy: opportunities and risks
Session 24
The current economic system is driving biodiversity loss and climate change, putting long-term business and societal resilience at risk. To ensure future prosperity, we need a transformative shift: from an economy that depletes nature to one that restores it - building a nature-positive economy. The scientific community recognizes the need for transformative change, but what does this mean for the private sector?
This session introduces the nature-positive economy, outlining its visions and key principles. Business leaders and representatives of sectors with a large dependence on biodiversity and healthy ecosystems discuss how the private sector responds to the push for transformation. We elaborate on visions for business opportunities based on highly functioning ecosystems, and risks related to ecosystem degradation. Furthermore, we discuss tentative pathways towards this goal, including the need for knowledge support from academia, and conducive conditions and mechanisms set by national and international policies and regulations.
